To assist conceptual studies of various reactor systems conducted by private sectors in nuclear power innovation, development of an innovative design system named ARKADIA (Advanced Reactor Knowledge- and AI-aided Design Integration Approach through the whole plant lifecycle) is undergoing to achieve the design of an advanced nuclear reactor as a safe, economic, and sustainable carbon-free energy source. In this paper, focusing on the ARKADIA-Design as a part of it, the progress in the development of optimization processes on the representative problems in the fields of the core design, the plant structure design, and the maintenance schedule planning are introduced.

The 3-GeV rapid cycling synchrotron of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) uses a large number of electromagnet power supplies in order to manipulate a high-intensity beam of 1 MW. These devices have been specially developed to meet the requirement to achieve acceleration of the 1-MW proton beams. State-of-the-art technologies are used to these devices. To achieve stable operation with few failures, and to prevent major troubles in the event of a failure, it is necessary to maintain the performance of the devices under the appropriate and accurate management strategy with an enough understanding of its characteristics. However, since the specification and function of each device is different respectively, and it is also produced by different manufacturer, we have to maintain adequately according to the structure, configuration and features of the apparatus. There are typically three major stages in the maintenance works. First, "Daily inspection" is constantly performed to monitor the status of the equipment during operation and check for any errors or abnormalities. Second, "Routine maintenance" is carried out weekly, monthly, or yearly to fix the errors, or to replace the parts that are deteriorated. Third, "Troubleshooting" is conducted to recover from sudden failures. In this report, we will introduce the specific contents of "Routine maintenance", "Daily inspection", and "trouble case" based on the experiences of the electromagnet power supply group. In particular, we will report the work management methods, including ideas for facilitating recovery work. We will also summarize the important points of a matter that does not depend on the configuration, structure, and characteristics of the equipment.

In order to reduce the influence on a plant schedule of the MONJU by the maintenance of dew point hygrometers, The JAEA examined a capacitance type dew point hygrometer as an alternative dew point hygrometer for a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer which had been used at the CV-LRT in the MONJU. As a result of comparing a capacitance type dew point hygrometer with a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer at the CV-LRT (Atmosphere: nitrogen, Testing time: 24 hours), there weren't significant difference between a capacitance type dew point hygrometer and a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer. As a result of comparing a capacitance dew point hygrometer with a high-mirror-surface type dew point hygrometer for long term verification (Atmosphere: air, Testing time: 24 months), the JAEA confirmed that a capacitance type dew point hygrometer satisfied the instrument specification (2.04C) required by the JEAC4203-2008.

There are waste storage pits where non-radioactive wastes generated from plutonium fuel facilities were stored in JNC Tokai Works. But radioactive wastes were found in one of the pit during wastes arrangement works. Therefore we set the pit temporary controlled area and recovered wastes from it. This report describes the radiation control technique of recovery work in detail.

In FY 1997, a program which evaluates the risk in each phase of the maintenance was developed to support the maintenance planning on an FBR plant. In FY 1998, the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of the program developed in FY 1997 was enhanced for its user-friendlyness including facilitation of data settings and interpretation of the computational results. Specifically, following functions were incorporated : (1)To call associated window displays (editing and reporting display) mutually. (2)To edit the combinations of the systems for their maintenance scheduling. Furthermore, some risk evaluation functions such as the database function for cutsets of accident sequences and tracking function of risk trends were developed and added to its analysis module. A series of test on the programs with the GUI and the analysis module was performed and it was verified that the progam worked correctly.
